For all the complaints they make about so-called “dark money” in politics, it certainly appears that those on left
are eager to get a slice of the pie–even if they may have to engage in some “creative accounting” to make it seem as though everything is on the table.
ActBlue is unclear as the cash of the progressive movement, boasting more than $6 billion raised for favored candidates since 2004. The funnel held more than $1.5 billion for left-wing candidates in 2018 alone, and has moved nearly $900 billion to support progressives thus far in 2019 and 2020.
Most donations, according to ActBlue, go through gift cards of $100 or less. That’s a lot of donations!
The organization has leveraged its Powerhouse presence to negotiate a special relationship with the bank so that it does not have to disclose donor names when processing its gift cards, as is often required for virtually all online transactions.
